The Family Annex is a pre-school that is affiliated with Columbia University, serving children ranging in ages between 19 months old and five years old. There are three classrooms as well as an art studio and backyard. The philosophy is drawn from the Reggio Emilia approach in Italy, which relies heavily on hands-on exploration and the concept of teachers and children as researchers. They currently serve a diverse, multicultural group of students from Morningside Heights and Harlem.
The grant from CCS is used to support scholarships for families, purchase cameras and computers which are used for documentation, and supply exploratory materials used in the classrooms and studio, such as light tables to enhance and support the Reggio Emilia philosophy.
