In early 1990, a local resident initiated a project aiming to restore and improve the section of Riverside Park at Tiemann Place, which had been abandoned by the Parks Department. The mission of the core eight Tiemann Place volunteers and others is to maintain, restore, and renovate the area between 125th street (St. Claire Place) and International House on East Riverside Drive (approximately 4 acres). Yoshiko Scholz who joined the project in the fall of 1995 has been leading it for the last 18 years.
CCS's funding has been very important in helping to achieve their mission. The grant is used to purchase tools and the acquisition of horticultural materials such as native perennials, bulbs, and shrubs.
